Paula VS Me...I Lose!

Here is Paula's masterpiece with a detailed pattern. Seems simple enough. It's not.

How on earth did I end up with the dreaded Y seam??

I have two sections sewn together. Of course, they are lumpy and bumpy and nothing fits as it should. I'm going back to where I can just lop a bit off if it's too long or add a chunk if it's too short. I'm not made for such precision. Mine looks like a simple star which I could do without all the headaches involved in making this one. Maybe I need a class. Or maybe I'll just go back to what I really enjoy.

This looks really complex. I like the looks of the block in the book. I can see how you would be challenged to try it. It's not paper pieced? If its really frustrating, its just not fun but I'll encourage you to give it one more try.

Frustrating! I love the look of precision piecing, but I've never actually made anything that required a high level of precision. You could just applique these pieces as they are and call it "Fractured Star"!! ;)

Good of you to get out of your comfort zone. Live and learn.

It actually looks pretty good from here, but I think that to get her full kaleidoscope effect you're going have to triple the number of pieces... ha ha ha! I'm glad you're trying this so I don't have to.

You're brave for tackling this block Joyce! I have one of Paula's books that I look at for the eye candy.

I really like how the Trifecta bag turned out; but an 8 page pattern...
*shudder*

If you hand-piece those sections that require the Y seams, you should be able to get them to match up nicely and not be lumpy.

I do not think this is any inspiration for me to make one of these....I have that exact fabric she used too.

Is there anyway this could be paper pieced?

I've been dwelling on the subject of 'making what I love' or trying something out of my element!

Maybe you can pick it back up another day/month/year, when your are in the right 'space?'

But I'm going to pat you on the back for giving it a 'go'! 8-))

There was a day when I would have welcomed this kind of challenge but now it just seems like too much work. I'll enjoy Paula's work as eye candy but I don't intend to try it. Life is short!

(and now you know too. . .)

I keep trying to make stars with points that line up. Diamonds are not going to beat me! Today I am working on a 6 pointed lone star type design and finally figured out that if I machine basted the stitches first to check the seams matching up - it went better. Time consuming, yes, but if you really want that star - it will be worth your time to pick away at it. Cheers! Evelyn

I reckon that would drive me nuts too. And all that wasted fabric from fussy cutting too in frugal times makes me feel uneasy!
