Winter Words

I am plugging away at the winter words. I am thinking of doing another Aurora Borealis using dark blue fabric and bleach. If I can get the look I want, I'll go back in with turquoise dye. Meanwhile, icicles is too dark for the rest of the letters so I'll either do it again or make some more words with that blue. I am going to make snowflakes so maybe I'll use that color for it if I have enough fabric left.
I seem to be at a place where I am sick of this one. Maybe it's all the cold colors. I am more interested when I'm using lots of different brights. Or maybe it's because it's -20 outside and all white with snow. Maybe I need color inside. Should I switch to spring now and do winter when it's sweltering and I'd give anything for a breath of cool air?
I am still waiting for my stitch regulator. I don't want to load a quilt in case I have to take the frame apart to get it installed. The dealer here has called Pfaff but there seems to be some delay. We have to go to town tomorrow so I'll drop in then and see what's happening.

Yep -- I know exactly what you mean about not wanting to work on "winter" when all you have to do to see it is look out your window. Not that cold here yet (only about -1 - -10 or so at night) but it's close. Play with some brights, enjoy the warm colors and come back to it when you're not freezing your fingers off!

its hard to feel motivated to do anything much beyond stay warm at these bone numbing temps...

You know what I was thinking ... if you are trying to make the sky look like it has the northern lights I would do this.

Dye your fabric dark blue but leaving little wax dots for stars.

Leave the wax on and brush bleach or do the tie die to make the shape of the aurora borealis.

Then, leaving the wax on the stars, dye the fabric (or at least the area with the aurora borealis) a cold light green. I think you could even use a brush to do this so it's a bit uneven.

I think then you would have this great dark blue sky, little twinkling lights of white for the stars (when you take the wax off...) and then you would also get that wierd color for the northern lights.

You could also lay the dark blue fabric out and use something like a cotton bud to dip in bleach and make the stars.
Then take a big wide brush and do the sweeping lines of the borealis with bleach.
When those areas have gone white, take the brush again to do the green colour. You could even add a bit of red, like we saw that one time.
I reckon if you use a brush to add the green you can vary it and that will give it movement. I also think if you use the brush for the bleach you will get that sorta fuzzy edge that you see in the sky.

Anyway, just a thought. I think the quilt is gonna look great - the colours are sure cold! lol

Joyce now might be a good time to have two projects on the go! I know, shock horror! I like your icicles too :)

oooo...I can hardly wait to see where you go with this one. If you get into discharging, how about doing it to some of your word blocks as well?

Maybe this would be a good one to work on in the summertime.

I see what you mean about the ICILCLES being a bit dominant, but I wouldn't dicard them yet. A quilt in similar values can be very boring, and maybe when you've done your Aurora (daren't write the word Boryalees in case I spell it wrong too!) it will fit in.

Yep - it's COLD all right but most effective! Love all the explanation that Carmel wrote - gives me some idea of what she's talking about. Don't quit on this one yet - it IS what is IS. COLD !
