Auction Sale

Here is the Red Bunny that I won on Thimbleanna's blog. He seemed a bit aprehensive about meeting all those chickens but I think they will get along fine! Thanks so much.

Yesterday we went to an auction sale to bid on some firewood. The wood went way too expensive so we didn't get it but I did score big time on this wonderful Singer treadle sewing machine! I got it for only $45. Can you believe that? The owner said it still works and all the gold is totally intact. I don't think it was used much because the gold near the needle that usually gets worn off is still there. The only damage that I could see is where the lid touches it on the back there is a tiny worn strip. The cabinet needs a bit of work and some re-finishing and the wheel needs some oil but other than that and one missing castor it's in excellent shape. We are not sure if the little wheel was on it and fell off while we were loading the car or if it was missing all the time. I think it was missing but we may call the owner and ask. If it got lost while we were carrying it to the car we'll go back and look for it.

Then to top it all off, I had just been saying that I'd like a chalk board to practise free motion on and there was one that nobody wanted for $1. It was still wrapped in plastic and the eraser is there too. The ironing board went up to $5 until the guy bidding against me realized it was an ironing board he was bidding on and backed out so it went back to $3. A quilter can never have too many ironing boards and this one has never felt the heat of an iron I'm sure from the condition of the cover.

We also got a little portable Hibatchi for $1. So it was a wonderful auction in spite of the wood.

sounds like you found a bunch of great stuff! I love using a treadle sewing machine for some things -- and the steady rhythm and sound is so meditative :-)

Isn't it so fun to find bargains! That sewing machine looks just like my grandmother's Singer. Talk about bringing back wonderful memories. What a treasure you have!

My great-aunt made all her clothes on a treadle machine into the 1970's. She was 4'6" tall and couldn't buy adult clothes that fit her. I don't know what happened to the machine when she died, but I would love to have it. What a find you had!

What a beautiful Singer treadle you got Joyce!!! Do you know what year it was manufactured and where? That is always fun to research. And I'm green with envy about that ironing board! What a bargain!!

Wow you got some great treats! That Singer is just beautiful, & couldnt go to a nicer home! As did the big Red Rabbit!
I get intimidated by auctions, but once got a lovely chair for my daughter for $2!
It was your lucky day.

Yay! Red Bunny made it. He looks so cute with all your chickens -- I do hope the old hens will take pity on his un-hen-like appearance and give him love. And aren't you a lucky girl? That machine is fabulous. Congratulations!

That log cabin chicken is so cute. I think I have a pattern somewhere....
In the blue book at the shop where I worked we could date all of the feathrweights by the serial number. If you want to send me the number I will see if the treadles were listed too. That is a beauty. You are right, an extra ironing board comes in handy, especially when a friend comes over to sew with you.

You make auctions sound like so much fun!! I'm wondering what that guy thought he was bidding on when it was the ironing board. Anyway, what great bargains you found! Recently I saw a treadle machine in a cabinet like that - at a garage sale - but I was driving past and felt that the timing was bad for my wallet, so I forced myself not to stop. I wonder what marvelous thing I passed up??

Hi, We have much in common: quilting, Canadian, and some thrifty (Scottish?) traits! What a great bargain hunter you are! And your quilting looks wonderful. I will be back to keep up with what you are doing.

I'm sure you are enjoying your purchases!

What a beauty of a machine . . . I hope to recondition the treadle we bought years back - and maybe even piece a little top on it one day *s*

One day I will find one to rescue (for a sensible price) as well!! For now I will just stick with the machine less table I managed to source. That would be around the $600 or higher here, good shopping, and the bags with the grandy's look fantastic, Tracey

Wow, I can't believe you got that machine for $45. I'd love one although I don't know where I'd put it. I have a small hand crank Singer that I bought for $100 about 4 years ago but I haven't tried to sew with it. It was used a decoration at the house in Marietta but right now it's in a closet. I should find a place for it on one of my shelves.
