Somewhere on the blogs I saw the idea of placing some plastic over the quilt and trying out patterns . I happened to have bought a piece of thick plastic at the thrift shop and I have some dry erase markers. They work perfectly on the plastic and are easy to erase. I still haven't come up with a design I like though. Part of the problem is that with my short arm system I am limited to about three inches deep. I can't do the whole star with one pattern because it's more like six inches square. I went out an measured. They are 7.25 inches square. A rather odd size I thought.
Here is the first layout for the K quilt. I'm sure it will undergo many changes before I sew it together. I also need to make a few more boxes. And decide what color to make the borders.
Now that I look at it in a photograph I see several changes I want to make. I have already made several since I took the picture.

Quilting ideas...
I have also seen where someone takes a photo of the whole quilt & prints it at 8.5 x 11 then puts it in a plastic page protector to try out overall quilting ideas.
Good idea. That may be my next move and I'll get all my friends and relatives to help.
What a lovely quilt. I think it needs only simple quilting, because it has so much design in it already.
Only 3" deep?! That is limiting isn't it? Hmmmm?

Well, yes, 3" is pretty limiting but not the end of the world :-) You say that the blocks are 6"? I am even more impressed with the quilt!
Okay, here's what I would do: Treat each horizontal third of the blocks as one row. On the top and bottom I would design my motif to focus on the part between the star points, quilting the same pattern upside down on the "bottom" star points row. If the horizontal sashing is narrow enough, I'd ignore it and allow my motif to overlap 30%-50% onto it. I'd just steamroll over the vertical sashing.
I would design a different but similar or complimentary design for the center third of the block - again avoiding the star points. Knowing me, I'd probably break down the motif even farther and design for the light sections (flipping them symmetrically on each side of the solid square), the solid square and the 4-patch.
Heh. This may be why it takes so long for me to finish a quilt. I can easily spend more time designing, marking and quilting than it took to actually piece the thing!
how's your handwriting? with a 3" height you could write a beautiful long letter over the whole quilt, talking about your relationship with the recipient, what making the quilt was like, etc... it'd give an all over pattern, hold it all together, let the quilt itself shine, and add yet another memory layer to the work...

Deciding what to quilt is always such a chore for me. I like Quilt Pixie's idea.
