Chickens

I am afraid you are going to be seeing a lot of chickens here for the next little while. They seem to be a bit addictive. Here are the prototypes so far. They are in the order that I made them so I think there has been some improvement. Once I get a handle on how to make them, I will try to get a bit more of a wonky look. Wonky is surprisingly quite a lot more difficult to do than straight. Next I need to make some looking the other way. The one I am in the middle of constructing is looking back over her shoulder. Hopefully, I will post her tomorrow. I also want to make at least one rooster and some eggs.

The gray sashing fabric doesn't work at all. It's the wrong gray and just deadens all the other colors. DH's idea is no sashing at all. I may give that a try unless I happen upon the perfect sashing fabric in the next few days. Then I would just put on some sort of border to make it larger or else make a few more blocks.

Yesterday I got a flier in the mail from Fabricland, saying that cutting mats, rotary blades and rulers were 40% off. I had all three in my hands, but I didn't read the fine print. The sale only starts tomorrow. So I put everything back and I will wait for a week. My mat is trashed and my blade is soooo dull. I have a blade sharpener for my smaller rotary cutters and it works quite well for at least three or four sharpenings but I haven't bought one for my 60mm cutter yet. Blades are quite expensive so even at $27 the sharpener is worth it. I have to order it from a catalogue or I would have it already.

I can never resist a chicken, there is something so friendly and quirky about them.

The chickens look good.

I tend to agree, the grey doesnt look good. What about the white fabric you used in the small squares?
I havent started on mine yet, I keep getting interrupted by 'life'! Which is rather inconvenient. LOL.

I love the last chicken you made... I have some of the body fabric in brown I think... the way you cut it to get a "wing" is wonderful. I've tucked the thoguht away in my mind for another day :-)

Hope you're missing the worst of the SW weather today...

The chicken are looking better every day. I especially like the last one. I agree with you about the grey fabric. HUMM, this is getting really difficult!

Grey is a tough color to use. I really like the blocks though. I'm impressed your DH gives an opinion!

Oh, wow, love those wonky chickens! Maybe you should do a tutorial!!! Can't wait to see how you use them.

Since some of you don't have email addresses posted I'll reply to your comments here. Thanks for the compliments on the chickens. I'm still looking for the right gray. My DH is an artist and taught high school art for years so I value his opinion which is always based on art theory and not just feelings. I don't always follow his advice though. Lol.
As for a tutorial, I just build each chicken up as I go, sort of using the method in Tonya's wonky letters. I might show a step by step but they are all different.

The chickens are great! My favorite is the third one. It reminds me of those fancy, exotic-looking chickens with all the fluffy feathers.

I agree that the gray doesn't do the blocks justice. Needs a warmer color.

I love that third chicken. That fabric you chose for the body is perfect. Seriously love this one. And I'm really enjoying seeing all the chickens as you make them. I made a LOT of houses before I started deliberately making them wonky. That didn't happen until my third houses quilt. Wonky takes time.

Your fun chicken quilt was featured on ChickenFlicker.com's One a Day, where we feature a chicken related item every day.
