First Mistake of 2007

Well, I didn't make it very far into 2007 before making my first big mistake! Sheesh! I would have liked at least a month. I have been quilting the butterflies with free motion. This morning I thought I would get a good start on the new year and used up one whole bobbin. When I took the quilt off the machine so I could refill the bobbin, I realized that I had forgotten that I was using orange on the bottom. I had sewn it with blue on the bobbin which looked ok but different. Yikes. It is not hugely obvious and will be a horror to undo but I will probably have to undo it anyway. I may finish the rest of the FMQ and then see if I have the courage to rip out the blue section. I am not a fan of ripping out at all.

So I went back and did another house and some more "parts" from my new book. There are no such things as mistakes with that method! Right up my alley.

Just call it quirky and live with it. It's the back of the quilt after all. If it's any consolation, that is just the sort of thing I do all the time.

It will be one of the things 100 years from now that will make people wonder -- what was the design significance here? *s*

can you do another section not touching this one in blue too, so it looks like you purposely choose to do it, even if you didn't?

how annoying for you to see this mistake after you had worked on the quilt for awhile.

Love the blocks you showed in your last post. I'll be watching with interest as it progresses.

Does it really matter that it's a different colour? It's the back, afetr all.

I'd go with quiltpixie and purposely mix the backing bobbins at random so it looks like you did it all deliberately - especially as it's on the back - why make work when you can make it a feature - an old boss of mine always used to say 'there are no such things as problems, only development opportunities' why not go the whole hog and add in another colour or two?

We learn the most from our mistakes. Treat it as a challenge to see how you can get out of it. Ripping is a very negative action...truly a last resort. Above all, keep smiling!

I vote for no ripping! And it is the back! I like the ideas of deliberately choosing different complementary colours. And what great free motion quilting it is! Again, thanks for showing the detail (and sharing your mistakes) - it really helps beginners like me :)

Add me to the no-rippers list! I think using a variety of bobbin colors is a great idea too.
