Now You See It...Now You Don't

Today I put the binding (gold) on the Tippy quilt and all I have left to do is hand sew it down on the back. I used nearly half a bottle of Elmer's School Glue on this quilt. As soon as I have done the hand sewing I'll toss it in the washer and hope all the glue comes out.

I have long wanted to try a Disappearing Nine Patch so I thought I'd play around with that pattern this afternoon. Above you can see the original nine patch, made large with 4" strips. Below are some different arrangements I tried. I have a lot more with the yellow corners so it's difficult to make a whole pattern.

Here are my questions. Should I make more of the same blocks or go for different colors. I find it a bit drab but then my taste does run to bright. Would it look better with sashing? Maybe yellow? Or just a wide yellow border? I'm sure I'll be playing with the endless arrangements possible with this block for some time.

I just dont seem to 'get' the disappearing nine patch. I have looked at it on other blogs, & decided I am not really keen. Maybe it is too random ...I am not sure. I liked the arrangement on the bottom the best.

I think you will find the glue washes out just fine. I've not tried the binding method with glue, but I have been using Elmer's SchoolGlue for my applique just about since I began applique - never had any trouble washing it out.

I've done the disappearing 9 patch, but with a more scrappy look. Why not try introducing another color . . . who knows what'll happen *s*

Disappearing 9 patch? From what I can put together you took a nine patch and then sliced it in half both vertically and horizontally to create 4 blocks to reassemble?

Personally I'd go with some more colours, the various layouts all feel repeatative.

It does look like a fun block - let's you play with layouts, etc. I think I would add another color, maybe red, maybe something with more of a pattern.

I'd probably add another color or two. I know the time or two I've played with it all of my 9 patches were scrappy and I love the way it has turned out.

Since I like a minium of 20 fabrics in a quilt that means adding 18 more. LOL I guess you have to decide if you want a scrappy or multicolor quilt, or is playing with the layouts the important part of this project. If layouts, 2 colors works.

I agree with others - add another color or 2. My friend just finished one of these, but she used white and lots of other colors for her 9 patches. There is a picture of it on my blog. It's very pretty.

I would lean towards at least one more color...if not two or three. Or perhaps just a lighter or darker of one of these hues? I always think that questioning oneself is a clue to wanting something "more."

They way I look at it if you took the four blocks in the top left corner. (two on the top row and the two on the second row)then assembled them to be one large block and use another color for sashing (yellow or that brown I think I see) and the yellow or brown for cornerstones.
IMHO
Well, you did ask.

They aren't quite my colours either...by themselves..., I would lean towards a third one and I think that may do the trick-but whatever you do will be great, tracey
