Not Sure...
I'm not sure about either of these options. The top one reads as gray from a distance, which I don't like at all. Up close it looks much better. The brown is one of the sale fabrics I bought yesterday, thinking of backings. Maybe I'll have to dye some different solids . Any ideas out there, other than, why didn't you get the fabric for the big blocks before making the 16 pacthes? Somebody suggested making big 4 patches for the middle blocks. I may try one of those as well.
I also thought of black blocks with stamping or embellishing but discarded that idea. I'd want them to stand out and they probably wouldn't against all those busy, busy 16 patches.

Good question. I like the black but if it is reading gray from a distance I would not go with it. But I don't think the brown is right either. I'm not a lot of help am I?
My first idea was something light, pastel, peach, light blue?
Those patches would also be the beginning of a good Pinwheels and 4-Patches (Quiltville.com)! That doesn't really answer your questions, does it? LOL
I'm thinking large squares of the plain bright colors. However, thinking in terms of what Kaffe does, a large scaled print with bright florals would be the way to go for those one-piece blocks.
I think Nellies suggestion is a good one. Either bright colours or large scale floral. Neither the black or brown do it for me.
Good luck with choosing.
How about ditching the idea of a spacer block and making a stack more patches and joining them all toghether a la Tonya R? It would look fantastic and solve the problem of trying to find a fabric to suit all the others.
Hmmmm. Well I can only imagine what I would do and generally that's not of any help. I'd have to think on it but can I contribute one thought?
Oh boy do I LOVE those 16 patches. I might just have to make me some for fun!!!
Is this crazy (you don't need to answer that!) -- I think it would look good with a variety of solid squares rather than just one. The 4-patch idea could be good, too.
I think I mentioned solids before. Try a solid black and see how the colors pop even more.
All except a couple of your 16 patches read as solids (from a distance) already so I think a large print could be the way to go. I wouldn't be opposed to 4 patches either with a diagonal pattern through the quilt.
Like Wanda and Nellie say: if you squint most of the 16 patches read as a solid. Go with a bright bold print.
I am seeing something a little more orange or coral as fitting between the blocks. It should be fairly large print or a solid.
