Village Borders

Today I put the trees and the triangle borders on my village. I got so interested in the borders that I forgot that I was going to quilt-as-you-go on this one and do some intricate quilting on the houses. Oh well, maybe I can still do something interesting there but it will be a lot harder on such a large piece. The next thing to decide is how to finish it. I still haven't come up with any words. It might be busy enough already without adding words to the mix. I like the burgundy border but I don't think I have enough of it. I could get some more but if I am going to buy more fabric I might think of black on the outer border. The piece on the left is the other black and white I bought on Wednesday. It might be all right if it was a bit wider, although it looks a bit gray from a distance. I can't use the checkerboard because it's not long enough and I have no more of the black fabric. Well, I will sit on it for a few days and see what ideas come to the surface. Meanwhile I will think about how to quilt it.

Its turning out wonderfully.... Do you have any of the bright fabric you used around the sidewalks of the houses on the top right -- with the flowers on it.... it'd be a great border... something loud and bright to go with the rest of the quilt. Maybe the purple you've got but narrower?

Hmm. Would you have enough of either the black or maroon fabric for borders if you used cornerstones? Or maybe something inserted on one side of the border?

I was making a cat quilt, and ran out of long border lengths. I REALLY didn't want to piece in some little bits I had, to make it long enough... I didn't think all the seams in the border would look nice.

So instead, I appliqued little running mice on 4 of the bits, and inserted them between longer lengths of border - so it looked like I intended to have a seam there, for the little mice applique patches. :)

Have you thought of cutting the batting into thirds and layering the quilt with just the centre piece of batting. Just bundle up the extra quilt and backing while you quilt the centre, staying away from the edges of the batting. Then add the side sections of batting one at a time. You have to stretch the quilt out properly again to pin the layers together, but it really does work well to eliminate all that bulk while you quilt the centre.

This is coming together so well. It seems to have taken no time at all to get to this stage.

wow this is looking so good, this is so bright and striking like a gorgeous box of chocolates you just cannot stop looking at... I would use black border the black helps to frame the whole piece and helps to make the rest of the colours sing, this is so yummy keep on going.

I'm jealous of both your quilt AND new appliances!!! As my mom would have said, "Use them in good health."

Would you have enough of the burgundy border if you did a smiggen of words...and then some solid burgundy together? Kind of like a pieced border/solid border?

Those appliances have found a wonderful home. You're very deserving of both of them! Love the stainless steel!!!

Wow -- it looks great. I think I prefer the maroon border. Bold in color to stand up to the quilt center. Restful to the eye because it is not a busy fabric. Just a thought

I just love this whole quilt, & imagine a child would just treasure it.
The black does look a bit grey in the pic, but I suspect it looks better in reality?

your quilt is looking better and better every time you post a photo of it. Whatever you decide to do to complete it will look great. Well done.

I love it - so bright. I would think if you have to buy fabric, black would be the go. The 'grey' isn't dark enough. The burgundy would be good if you can make it stretch somehow. Looks fantastic!

zThat is one great quilt! I have a thing about houses, and house quilts are right up my alley (sorry, couldn't resist the pun, LOL!)Yours is lovely and colourful and that polka dot fabric for the inner border is an inspired choice! I think I would go for black for the border, or maybe a black with some burgundy in it? And how about using the black and white check for the binding?

Thanks for the nice comments you leave in my blog :-) I can be a bit slow when it comes to replying sometimes, but they are much appreciated!

What an incredible quilt! The colors are beautiful and bright and happy, and the black and white really sets it off. Great job!
