I Ruined it so...

I made another one.

Lessons learned:
1. Start with the size you want. Don't cut it bigger, thinking you'll crop it later. It was planned on an 11x14 piece and cut down to 9x12. It didn't look nearly as good without all that sky.
2. If the colors are soft, make the border soft too.
3. Don't try mitred corners with piping without some lessons.
4. Add the borders BEFORE batting and quilting. I knew that. What was I thinking?
5. Just because the book says make each sample 9x11 doesn't mean you HAVE to.
6. You can probably make a purse out of almost anything. Stay tuned for that one.

I'll get a thread that matches the green part better before quilting this one. If I do put on borders they will be a slightly darker blue. No bright red. I'll probably omit the flower pin. That only pins on at the end so I can reserve judgment on that one. I still like the layout of the flowers on the first one better but I have a limited amount of that fabric so I made do.

By the way, that is the same piece of blue fabric in the background. It is two different photos taken on different camera settings, then combined on CorelDraw. I must learn more about my camera. The one on the left is a more accurate color.

I've also had a couple of do-overs recently! It's always aggravating, but I guess there are lessons in those frustrating moments! I like it better with more sky too.

You only learn by playing and expectations aren't always met. I have been there so many times.....

"What was I thinking?" lol! Thanks for the laugh... 8-)

It is looking good Joyce...

I see all your points... Ooooo mitering piping!?! yikes! that would be hard!

do omit the flower pin...lol 8-)

Happy creating!

Piping is a nice touch... why not try it in a contrast (maybe not red?) and use the sky fabric as the border fabric? That would set your floral motif in a narrow frame and yet get lots of nice sky around it.

I've a couple little ones like this to finish, and just gave myself an idea of how to do it. Oh, that is funny!

I don't have a problem with the red border or the amount of sky in that composition. You could always add some more flowers along the border to soften the color if that bothers you. Or, you could trim it down and add a nice wide pink border.

gd learnings. Not fun to learn by trail and error always, but worth learning. :-)

It takes strength to admit something doesn't work. I agree that the expanse of sky was what made it work. When I first saw it without the border, my thought was "surrealism" and Magritte. I like the idea!

Once learnt, never repeated (she says tongue in cheek!).

Thanks for sharing your lessons. I admire you so!

It's all a learning curve, so take heart from that (and the bag you're going to make!)
